Using Insurance to Pay for Physical Therapy Visits

We are happy to assist you in determining your level of coverage for outpatient physical therapy services, and will verify coverage before initiating physical therapy.

Please note: Your expected contribution for outpatient physical therapy may not be the same as your co-pay or co-insurance for other types of medical visits.

Summit Physical Therapy accepts most major insurance plans, including UPMC and BCBS, Workers’ Compensation, and auto insurance.

We have contracts with most insurance carriers and will send bills to these carriers on your behalf.

What do physical therapists do and when should I see a physical therapist?

Physical therapists are experts in restoring movement and function and minimizing/eliminating pain. After examining patients, therapists create comprehensive programs focused on total body care and injury prevention, as well as safe and timely returns to work, life, or sports. Depending on the needs of a particular patient, physical therapists may mobilize a joint, provide soft tissue work to a muscle, or perform a corrective exercise to restore normal movement patterns and function. In addition to this hands-on care, physical therapists educate patients on preventing injury and performing home exercises.

You may need to see a physical therapist for after an acute injury, such as a broken bone or torn muscle, to regain strength or range of motion, or for a chronic condition such as arthritis. Your primary care physician or an orthopedic surgeon will usually make the recommendation that you seek care from a PT.

Do I need a referral to be treated at Summit Physical Therapy?

In most cases, patients with commercial insurance can be treated for 30 days without a prescription from your doctor. However, there are instances where a prescription or referral is needed. Please call us at any location and speak to one of our front office staff members for exact information. Medicare patients do require a prescription for physical therapy before treatment can begin.

Please also note, some doctors may direct their patients to a specific rehabilitation center for care or provide you with a list of physical therapists in your area. In some cases, your insurance company will guide you to the “in network” providers that are included in your insurance plan. But the final decision as to where you receive rehabilitation care is up to you.


Will the physical therapist communicate with my healthcare provider?

Summit Physical Therapy recognizes that open communication among the members of your health care team (you, your therapist, your health care provider, etc.) is essential to making your rehabilitation experience a success. As a result, the physical therapist will send your health care provider a complete written report that includes the findings of the initial evaluation, the assessment of the injury, and a detailed description of the treatment plan.

The physical therapist will continue to update your health care provider with written progress reports before each follow-up appointment (so it’s important to let your therapist know if you have an upcoming appointment with your health care provider).

Additionally, the therapist will not hesitate to contact your provider by phone if he/she has a specific concern or question. At the end of your treatment, the physical therapist will send a final report to your health care provider with information regarding your status at the time of discharge from physical therapy.


What do I need to bring with me to my first appointment?

For your first appointment, you can arrive at the clinic about 20 minutes before your scheduled time to complete the patient intake packet. Or, you may print the forms from our website and bring them with you. In addition, please bring your insurance card, co-payment, recent reports from X-ray or MRI tests you have that relate to your current problem.

You will also need to be prepared to complete some information about your medical history, including prior surgeries and other treatments you may have had, even those not related to your current problem. You should also bring a list of current medications you are taking, including over the counter medications and nutritional supplements.

Last, please wear comfortable clothing that will allow you to move unhindered while the therapist performs the evaluation.


What types of payment is accepted for my co-payment?

For your convenience, Summit Physical Therapy accepts cash, personal checks, and most major credit cards.


What types of insurance are accepted at Summit?

Summit Physical Therapy accepts most insurance plans. If you have any questions regarding your insurance carrier’s participating providers, please contact your insurance representative. We also accept Worker’s Compensation assignments, provided we are on your employer’s panel of approved providers. Please check with your employer’s human resources department if you have any questions regarding your worker’s compensation coverage.


Who is financially responsible for my office visit?

Please remember that all professional services rendered are charged to the patient. Summit will fill out the necessary forms to send to your insurance carrier. However, if we do not hear from the insurance company within six weeks, it is your responsibility to follow up on the claim. Also remember that you are responsible for any amount not covered by your individual insurance plan. If payment is not received within 60 days, your account will be considered delinquent. Patients with no insurance coverage may establish an installment plan for payment for any outstanding charges.
